How
Much Do You Know about Georgia Lacrosse?

Interscholastic
varsity lacrosse in Georgia officially started in 1999 when eight
schools began playing boys lacrosse and six schools played girls
lacrosse. However, several club teams existed in the state before
1999 and traces of lacrosse at the high school level were seen as early
as the 1970's (for more about the history of lacrosse in Georgia, go to
the History link).

High school
girls teams from Georgia have a 116-50-5 record against teams from
outside the state. This includes wins over teams from North
Carolina, Florida, Tennessee, Texas, Kentucky, Missouri, South Carolina, and
Virginia.

Lacrosse was
officially sanctioned by the Georgia High School Association in 2002.
Georgia is one of 21 states that have lacrosse sanctioned by their state
athletics association. Others include are Colorado, Connecticut,
Delaware, Florida, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New
Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Virginia.

A championship
game record crowd of 44,920 watched the 2005 NCAA Men's Division I final
between Johns Hopkins and Duke at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial
Field. The NCAA Division I men's basketball championship is the
only other NCAA championship to have drawn more spectators. The
largest crowd to ever watch a lacrosse game was the 46,923 to watch the
2004 NCAA Division I men's semifinals at Baltimore's M&T Bank Stadium.

A crowd of
19,432 watched the 2005 National Lacrosse League championship game
between the Toronto Rock and Arizona Sting, setting a new league record.
The game was also broadcast live in the US (NBC) and Canada (Score).

A crowd of 6,820
- the largest crowd to ever watch a women's lacrosse game in the US -
was on hand at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, MD, for
the championship game of the IFWLA World Cup between Australia and the
US.

In the Academic
Progress Rate report issued by the NCAA in the spring of 2005, women's
lacrosse was tied for the highest score of any sport (981) and men's
lacrosse was also ranked among the highest (964).

Lacrosse is the
official team sport for the state of Maryland. It is also the
official summer sport of Canada.
